It almost looks like sand in monochrome, but its the algae covered pond surface.
Algae can be sympotmatic of a bigger problem affecting the pond. As time went on, the pond has virtually dried up and vanished into the surrounding landscape. I believe it's feeder stream was somehow blocked.
