I dropped my camera 12/03/2005

view map

I placed my camera (Canon EOS 1D with a Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L lens) in the backseat of my car after Gail's hockey game and when I opened the back door of the car in my driveway, the camera leaped out and landed on the concrete driveway, destroying the HOYA HMC SUPER 77mm UV filter. The lens now shows a little rough spot along the edge. Thank goodness the lens and camera still work.

Good case for always having a filter on your lens. When I took Photography in High School in 1973 we were not allowed to participate in the class unless we had filters on our lenses.

I had my Nikon D800 knocked out of my hands last December by a errant 9 year old boy "running" in a crowd at Disney, Planet Hollywood. D800 and 24-70 2.8 bounced down 17 concrete steps. Parents looked at me and went ehhhh- walked away.

Yeah, most horifc feeling EVER.

Leapt right out there, did it? That had to be a sickening feeling. I'm glad it wasn't worse.

Better leave it right there till the police arrive.
They might want to dust it as part of the crime scene.

Ouch!!

On the ironic side, you may wish to include this as "dead lens" along with the deer, dog, race horse, racoon, etc ;-(

That lens is a tank. I dropped mine with a 1d2 on pavement from the backseat of a car. The 1d2 'bounced' off the pavement onto the rim of the glass. Barely a scratch on either! You get what you pay for.

I've read numerous debate on the role of a UV filter and how it protects the lens. In your case the UV filter definitely saved your lens. Otherwise the crack could have been the front element of the lens.

Just be thankful it wasn't a Nikon. Only kiding.

Darn cameras! I hate the way they leap sometimes.
