The edict of 1492 expelled the Jews of Spain, and they weren't allowed to take any gold or silver with them. Prior to that over 10,000 jews were burned at the stake as heretics. The confiscated gold, silver, and precious gems of the jews were used to build this 14 foot monstrance. It was done for the glory of god. It is worshipped by catholic visitors to this day.
