Hi Christina

Again I am not sure, but you could have either American Goldfinch or Lesser Goldfinch in SoCal, and I think this might be Lesser. The bill should be pinker in American. Also in American Goldfinch the black of the cap doesn't cover the eye.

With the black cap, the shape of his tail and beak, I think he's an American Goldfinch.
