Great Caribbean Coral Reef

Great Mexican reef is second in size in the world after Great Barrier Reef in Australia. The reef is 950 km long and full of fascinating marine life. The pictures were taken by different cameras and this was our first time underwater exersice, so please be merciful with critique :-). WB was not always perfect, since we needed to set this up manually to different depths... Cameras ranged from $20 35 mm disposable one , and all the way to PS45 & Ricoh and SeaLife special underwater equipment. Out trusted companion Canon Powershot S45 did in fact a fabulous job. Amazingly enough, the most difficult shots to take were at 3-5 m depth because of currents and waves. We also found new friend Raphael who was very kind to allow to post some of his pictures as well. Raphael is running scuba diving business at Paradiso Reef ( next to resort Iberostar Paradiso Lindo ), he's absolutely top notch professional and you might have very safe and enjoyable underwater adventure under his supervision. The beauty of this reef is beyond the description, I think this is the best place in the Mayan Riviera. This gallery will be very dynamic, please visit often, as we took more than 300 pictures. Pictures are great, but they make me very Sad, Reef looks much better that the ones in Key West, but still a distant shadow of what coral reef were 30 years ago. If you do not have a reference, the reef looks great. If you have a reference it is depresing. No sea urchins, no Staghorn Coral (Acropora cervicornis). It is a coral reef on stress.

These photos are absolutely beautiful, the colors and the composition and your eye for detail. I have been SCUBA diving since '77 and have tried underwater photography before, it's difficult. You have done quite well, and you say it's your first time too. You've got a talent for this.

These are incredible photo's. I dived here too back in 2001 whilst on honeymoon (snorkel rather than scuba - although I'm working on that for the next time), you've done an absolutely incredible job with the clarity of photo, as well as colour. Well deserving of a vote!
