performing at Porgy&Bess, Vienna on November 5, 2005. Tom Harrell is one of the great tragic figures in today's jazz scene. Suffering from paranoid shizophrenia since his late teens, he has to be under medication all time in order to be able to lead a (more or less) normal life. Music is his only window to reality. On stage, he appears absent and uninvolved as long as his fellow musicians are playing, but as soon as he takes up his horn, he changes to complete concentration. Tom Harrell was three times named trumpeter of the year by Downbeat Magazine. See more images of that gig at http://www.pbase.com/ekke/tomharrell
