The Fort at Number 4

Fort at Number 4, located in Charlestown, New Hampshire, is a re-created fortified colonial period village and is one of several Living History Museums in the U.S.

The original fort was the northern-most English settlement along the Connecticut River in New Hampshire until after the French and Indian War. The land was originally pruchased in 1735, as part of the Massachusetts General Court's provission for 26 land grants which allowed the westward expansion of the colonial settlements. The fort was built in 1740, and becoming the home of several families who setteled there. At the time of it's construction the closest settlement of any kind was more than 40 miles downstream and accross the Connecticut River. The area was also the the home land of the Abenaki indians until the end of the French and Indian War which drove the indians north. The fort was used as a rallying point for the troops fighting in the American Revolution. With the threat of the indians gone, and independance from the British achieved, the fort fell into disrepair as more settelers came into the area.

In the 1960's the fort was reconstructed to become a living museum to students and visitors interested in learning what life was like in New Hampshire in the clonial period. The museum is open to the public on Wednesdays thru Sunday's during the months of June thru October, with special events and reinactments scheduled at special times in that period. Since the fort was closed when the pictures were taken in April 2007, I will be returning later in the year to photograph it in more detail, so please check back.
