For those of you interested, this is the spot from where Giuseppe Garibaldi, a famous Italian patriot and hero, left with his men (apparently 1000 - "mille" in Italian) to Sicily in 1860 giving the start for unification of Italy. On the right side of the picture you could notice an obelisc with a star at the top marking the exact point where the fleet left.
