Argus Tele-Lithagon 100mm Lens in Gardens, July 4

Tele-Lithagon 100mm lens, s/n 5663, made by Enna Werk Munchen for Geiss Modified Argus C4.

I used this particular lens several months ago at Big River access, mounted to a Geiss Modified Argus C4. At that time, the results were disappointing, with flare, poor contrast, and uneven focus across the images.

I was not able to see much wrong with the lens when inspected, so I did a little experiment today. This time I hand held the lens against the front of a Pentax D SLR and tried some shots here at home in our gardens.
Since it has no mirror box, the Argus C4 body is much shallower front to back than an SLR, so I could not reach infinity focus. This arrangement only allows close ups and macros, the closest was 5 feet or so from subject.

I had to hold the lens in two hands with lens pressed against the front of the camera, and so everything was hand held.

Why did the lens perform so much better than it did with film in its intended camera body?
Maybe because the digital body has a smaller sensor than 35mm film size, so that the images are essentially "cropped" to the center area.
That, and I had more leeway in working on characteristics such as contrast and color balance using software.

July 4th this year has been a hot one, by the way.
