The second Mayan site we explored was "Cahal Pech", meaning "Place of Ticks" (a reference to the fact that the ruins were found in a modern cow pasture). This city was active from about 1000 BC to 800 AD.
This site has been criticized for being "over restored" - certainly the structures appear to have a lot of modern stonework to fill them out. Conversely, trees have been allowed to grow relatively close to the structures, and the jungle is reclaiming the stonework, so the whole site feels a bit more "undiscovered" compared to Xunantunich (where in fact the opposite is true).
It is more atmospheric of a site to visit, with the trees towering over the structures. Good photo ops, as well.
