The small palms are all Chamaerops humilis. Bamboo is Semiarundinaria fastuosa and didn't stay there! That got replaced by Phyllostachys aureosulcata "Spectabilis".
Why a dry river bed? Well bark mulch was costing a fortune and the soil is so full of stones it seemed a shame to waste them after having put so much effort in to digging them up!
