Rupelmonde

Rupelmonde is situated on the left bank of the Scheldt opposite the mouth of the river Rupel.
Rupelmonde became in the 12 th century a centre for commerce and industry, was fortified and had a gigantic waterfortress.Jealousy caused wars and destruction.Spanish and French troops also passed here..
In 1512 Mercator the famous cartographer was born here.
Rupelmonde has the only tidemill(first in 1187,reconstructed in 1516 and more recently)in Belgium that is still in service (when tides are favourable and on request)
Only in the 19th century prosperity came back with the brick-works ,today there is a shipyard for river-vessels and it's a quiet spot to live and for smallscale tourism.
