Frontside:water flows in from the river Scheldt (behind the dike)and is now controlled by modern valves.
After recent inundations in 1990 a new dike was constructed to combine safety and the necessary water-level for the tidemill.
The simplicity of the valves is impressive. The design probably dates back hundreds of years yet was so good it can't be improved upon. I am often fascinated how designs from so long ago end up being so perfect they are still used today. We need to think simple, often it's better than some of the complicated things we come up with today.
