The stag and doe deer guarding Mandraki harbour depict a special breed which was said to have been introduced in classical times (suggested by the oracle in Delphi apparently) to combat a plague of snakes. They think that the deer either trampled on the snakes or the snakes were poisoned by the deer dung. Today the snake plague has diminished but real deer can be seen in the mountains and supposedly in Rhodini Park - not that we saw any there :-S These deer were the only ones we saw oh and on pebble mosaics and drain covers - well it is the national symbol of Rhodes!
