12/1/07 - D300 PAD #2

Handheld using Nikkor 18-200 VR lens. (I only mention that since 99.99% of my shots are made with a tripod - but until Kirk ships the L-bracket for the D300 it can't be attached to the ball head quick release clamp).
A bit chilly. By now I'd been out over an hour and my handball damaged hands don't handle cold well. Looks nice and warm though, doesn't it.
This is a 14 bit RAW image - several more stops of dynamic range than earlier Nikons (and most other cameras of any make). No comparison to a jpeg (8 bit) images when it comes to dynamic range (which for landscape images like this with extreme tonal differences between the sky and foreground is ultra important). As a comparison, there is absolutely ZERO detail in any of the dark silhouettes for the jpeg version of this image (I shot both RAW & jpeg) whereas the RAW version has detail throughout (although you wouldn't know it by looking at this image since I *chose* to show the silhouetted areas as basically black when I processed the images from RAW to jpeg - "artistic license" - but at least I had the choice; for the jpeg black is black is black....)
