9/1/07 - Sunburst

An image that I've made in one form or another a hundred times. This is a bit of a technical challenge in terms of shooting into the sun and getting the exposure correct - plus a sunburst. The hardest parts for me are to avoid having the tree show up as a black silhouette and to get the sunburst without a bunch of colored lines and balls all over the place (otherwise known as lens flare). If you've never tried a sunburst, the "trick" is to use a very small aperture (f/22 works well here) and to have just a small piece of the sun (or other bright light source) visible at the edge of some solid object (the tree in this case).
Speaking of sunbursts, I've been reading Mountain light by Galen Rowell and am amazed at his ability to nail nearly impossible exposure situations (as often as not while simultaneously dangling from a rope 1000's of feet in the air on the side of some mountain). Simply amazing.
