2/24/07 - Dare to be Different

Doing more RAW conversion tests - continuing from yesterday. Decided to use a new test image and here it is.
I should mention that these colors, by my eyes, are right on the mark. Ever since I laid out about $40 for a precision, calibrated gray card two months ago I've been shooting almost exclusively using a measured white balance setting and stopped using the camera's canned WB settings. I measure immediately before shooting and fairly regularly thereafter even if the light doesn't appear to be changing (like every 30-60 minutes). What a difference this has made. The odd thing, though, is that I measure the WB using a cheap coffee filter held tight across the lens - and not with my $40 card. There is a time & place for the card but for normal shooting the coffee filter is usually quicker and seems to provide just about the same accuracy (one day I'll try measuring the difference accurately, but for now my eyeballs say it's pretty darn good - much better than the camera's canned WB).
