12/28/05 - Oh, Shenandoah

Overlook view of the Shenandoah River as it winds through (what else?) the Shenandoah Valley. View is west toward the Massanutten Range in the distance. The river flows generally in a south to north direction up the valley to the Potomac River. Throughout its journey it winds back and forth from east to west with an occasional turn to its northerly path.
View is from an overlook in the Shenandoah River Park - a Virginia State Park - which is new to me. We ended up here because Skyline Drive is in its perpetual winter state of CLOSED due to snow and ice. Today Skyline Drive was clear (so a ranger told me) but a few overlooks had icy spots so the entire drive remained closed. Fixed snow removal budget - regardless of the weather - dictates that a little salt on the overlooks is cost prohibitive. Sorry, but as a taxpayer I object to underfunding the national parks to the point where citizens can't access them for weeks at a time BUT we can afford to budget billions to buy garbage trucks for Iraq & feed the VP's old company's coffers with sole-source billions. Yeah, W, color me unpatriotic for that statement (oh he who says that you're either with me or against me). Rant, rant. Geez! (And please don't trip over the soapbox when you're coming after me.)
As an aside, the song Shenandoah is not about this river. It's a ballad of a man who was in love with the daughter of the indian chief, Shenandoah. Thus the words "Shenandoah, I love your daughter" - or so the story goes. Regardless, still a beautiful folk song.

Bob Dylan
Shenandoah

Oh, Shenandoah, I long to hear you
Look away, you rollin' river
Oh, Shenandoah, I long to hear
Look away, we're bound away
Across the wide Missouri.

Now the Missouri is a mighty river
Look away, you rollin' river
Indians camp a long her border
Look away, we're bound away
Across the wide Missouri.

Well, a white man loved an Indian maiden
Look away, you rollin' river
With notions his canoe was laden
Look away, we're bound away
Across the wide Missouri.

Shenandoah, I love your daughter
Look away, you rollin' river
It was for her I'd cross the water
Look away, we're bound away
Across the wide Missouri.

For seven long years I courted Sally
Look away, you rollin' river
Seven more years I longed to have her
Look away, we're bound away
Across the wide Missouri.

Well, it's fare-thee-well, my dear, I'm bound to leave you
Look away, you rollin' river
Shenandoah, I will not deceive you
Look away, we're bound away
Across the wide Missouri.
