8/13/04 - Robber Fly

Sorry. Couldn't get the next stage of the hibiscus. Very heavy rains from the residue of hurricane Bonnie beat the hibiscus blossoms down; will have to wait for them to recover.

The robber fly is a voracious predator & will take on insects more than its size. This one sat at the edge of a spider web. The curious spider came over to see what he had - end of spider. John Shaw, author of Closeups in Nature, opined that if robber flies were the size of a cocker spaniel we wouldn't dare to go outside. But here's a critter that even the robber fly wouldn't tangle with http://www.pbase.com/image/32524055

other sizes: small medium original auto

Wonderful shot. How did you get this fly to stay still so long?

This looks more like a mosquito to me than a fly but a good shot whichever. What kind of camera do you use? I love these aperture shots. Bobbie
