A view of a mountain that is a popular hiking destination in the Blue Ridge mountains. This view is from Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park. There are several approaches and trails - my favorite is starts at the White Oak Canyon trail parking near Skyline Drive milepost 42 - elevation about 3600'. Down the Old Rag fire road (to river at about 1000'), up Old Rag (3268'), back down Old Rag and then back up to the drive via the White Oak Canyon trail is a good day hike of about 15 miles. The canyon trail is steep in places with lots of switchbacks to get you where you're going - with several waterfalls.
Old Rag is rare in terms of eastern mountains - it has a bare rocky top with a 360 degree view. Popular with rock climbers. The mountain's name is based on the stone from which it was formed one-billion years ago - Old Rag Granite.
