Kuching is steeped in British history; the European influence is hard to ignore, yet it doesn't seem to be either out of place of resented. Anyway, I stayed at the Hilton and enjoyed views of temples and mosques from a distance, a walk along the Sunghai Sarawak, admired the Courthouse and Brooke Memorial (Sir Charles Brooke died in 1917), idled by the waterfront after ambling along the promenade, and was delighted to see St George's flag flutter from atop of Fort Margherita.
