Britain's oldest brick-built lighthouse is located just off Leasowe Common. Built in 1793 it is now disused, at least in the traditional sense. The structure has been restored over the years by a voluntary restoration group (aided by some public funds!) and is now open to the public on particular days throughout the year...today was not one of them!
