I stayed very near to a quite stunning street when I visited Riga. Called Alberta iela, the diversity and beauty of the Art Nouveau buildings meant that an expected 5 minute walk through on the way to the centre of town ended up being over an hour. This street itself should be in the tourist guides, enduring quite a history since 1900, being named after Bishop Albert, the historical founder of Riga. A number of buildings were designed by Mihail Eisenstein, his son probably being more well known, the film director Sergei Eisenstein. After German and Soviet occupation and great neglect, the street started to be restored a year before independence in 1990.
