To the left in this picture, some 13 km (8 miles) outside Karl, lies Eldey ("the fire island"), formed from a submerged volcano.
It's 77m high, and hosts one the biggest Gannet (Sula bassana) colonies in the world.
Eldey has been a protected nature reserve since 1940, and access is prohibited. Eldey was also the place where the last pair of the now extinct
Great Auk (Pinguinus impennis) was killed. The very last nesting pair was killed there in 1844 :( Ref.: Wikipedia: Great Auk
Whilst standing here I saw a passing Northern Minke whale (Balaenoptera acutorostrata), and I also managed to add a new bird species to my overall aggregated list,
as two Manx Shearwater (Puffinus puffinus) sailed by, with their wingtips typically an inch from the sea surface!
Yeeiii - as this was our last day on Iceland, that was a grand finale to a totally amazing trip!
