Karl

Offshore the Reykjanes peninsula in SW Iceland, near Keflavik, you'll find the sea stack Karl ("the old man"). It's a 52 m high volcanic remnant,
housing a substantial colony of Gannets (Sula bassana). It has a tough "life", as it resides in an extremely active earthquake zone,
amid the western tectonical ripzone (WRZ) between the North-American and the Eur-Asian tectonic earth-plates, which here slides apart with some 12-48mm pr. year.
Furthermore, the climate and the North Atlantic ocean are rough here, with wave heights of more than 15m. Although the coastal cliffs are 5-15m high,
large boulders weighing up to 70 tons have been thrown by the waves a whopping 65m inland.
And the maximum distance of boulder and driftwood deposition were found respectively 210m and 550m inland!
Imagine that, timber-sized logs landing more than half a kilometer from the shore..!
I guess walking these shores during a storm requires something more than an umbrella! :)
