The Florentines created the town of Scarperia in 1306 as a colony in their power struggle with feudal lords & robbers for territory & security along the road to Bologna. The country people were moved into town, but, exploited either way, they preferred civil rule & protection to feudal license & lawlessness. The town was laid out from scratch, with the novelty of straight streets.
