The eastern end of this section pre-2015 began west of Phoenixville near the intersection of Cromby and Township Line Roads. There is a nice trailhead parking area and the trail itself was completed (2011) with a mix of very nice rolled fine cinders and black top. Ye Olde Photographer hasn't been keeping up too well, but some mapping suggests the trail may now (early 2015) have walking access all the way to Frick's Lock Road — we might soon get closer to Pottstown! However a July 2015 ride through Spring City to Linfield Road saw no more than a dirt track beyond that point.
Noted in July 2015, a segment is open, or at least passable, east from Township line into Phoenixville. It deviates from the railroad grade and goes up over a ridge the RR tunneled through, crossing Filmore Street. That portion has a substantial grade (10%?) that YOP wasn't prepared to attempt at the end of a ride in the opposite direction.
As best Ye Olde Photographer can recall, Cromby Generating Station, an Excelon PECo facility skirted by the trail, was originally built to burn coal silt dredged from the Schuylkill, a "gift" that reached astronomical amounts in the early to mid-1900s. The plant now runs quietly and cleanly on natural gas.
