11 May 2009 was a big day for many MCCC ceramics students. Two new gas kilns arrived and were moved into the appointed locations. The process was long and involved as various obstacles required resting a kiln on blocks to reposition various jacks and lifts. Starting in the early light of day at 7:00 AM, the kilns were in their final locations by about 11:00.
This is the first of several steps; other contractors will have to cut through and connect vent stacks, hook up gas lines, etc. before these can actually run.
Later in the summer: Well! There were so many potential problems, including lack of space in this room, that the sheltered corner of the outside deck was expanded and the kilns are now located there along with the raku kiln. It's a bit rough on the studio assistants in the winter, but solves many other problems. The formerly intended kiln room is still a kiln room; the bisque kilns have been relocated there for better ventilation and workspace.
