This painting hung in a local tavern for
many years which may explain the style!
Molly Pitcher was a nickname for a woman,
Mary Ludwig Hays, who carried water during
the Battle of Monmouth in New Jersey and took
over firing her husband's cannon after he was
wounded. She lived in Carlisle after he died.
