Generator

This was a 3.5 megawatt alternator, one of seven, driven by "top gas" from
the blast furnaces. This included a gigantic two cylinder engine and put out 3-phase,
25 Hz AC power at 6600 volts. This was once in a building that stood here where it and
six siblings supplied 24.5 MW of power for mill operations. YOP views this machine with
great disappointment - there's a large chunk of it missing! The cut off studs seen
on the left side were used to mount cylinders that probably stuck out another three
or four feet to the left. The cylinders, cross-head and pistons all appear to be gone,
with the machine somewhat butchered in the process - bummer! A nice article on power at the
mill may be seen at: http://www.ieee.org/organizations/pes/public/2008/sep/peshistory.html
