The Saturday morning demonstration at Handbuilt 2013 was by Lana Wilson. Lana produces very colorful pieces by layering slips and texturing. She is quite knowledgeable and has written many articles for ceramics publications. Her website offers a book and DVD, as well as some glaze formulas. The demo was very loose and laced with plenty of humorous stories; quite entertaining as well as inspiring. Captures of projected slides here are from Lana's Friday night introductory presentation.
A number of pieces have relatively simple form, but incredibly complex color patterns produced by layering colored slips and scraping with various tools to intermingle colors and textures. Lana makes much use of textures created by adhering and modifying bits of clay to wet slab, but also by using stamps. She claims to have made about 5000 stamps -- and to have thrown 4000 away! She has a wild sense of humor and her presentation was quite entertaining.
This was Ye Olde Photographer's first pass working in this environment of harsh theatrical lighting and inability to get a good sight line much of the time. Since capturing projected slides has been pretty successful, he tried that with the live video. Alas, even the miracles of Photoshop were unable to do much with the results. So there are a few video captures here, but YOP apologizes for giving Lana short shrift.
