At Easton, the Lehigh Canal, paralleling the river by that name, connected to the Delaware Canal along the Delaware River on the Pennsylvania side. The Delaware Canal provided a southerly path to bring canal boat loads of anthracite coal down to Philadelphia. The canal and its towpath are now a long skinny state park.

For most of 2011, there have been stretches closed or left unsuited for cycling due to damage from flooding of the Delaware River in fall 2010, spring 2011, and again in August and September 2011. Portions may still be unusable.
