A new pedestrian bridge is appearing. It enables a straight line path from Parkhouse Hall to the new Fine Arts Center by carrying foot traffic over a wet natural area between the two buildings.
On Wednesday, March 18th, seeing the set-up of the huge crane brought in to swing the new pre-built span into place was almost as exciting as the bridge! (But then Ye Olde Photographer is into things mechanical!) The day ended with the mid-afternoon delivery of the new bridge.
Thursday, March 19th, dawned chilly, damp and cloudy, with the promise of rain toward midday. Starting about 8 AM, the crane crew went through some checks and tests, then the bridge span was brought closer. After rigging slings to the span, it was whisked up, up and away and deposited in position. To the great joy of all, the length was correct! :-)
The most remarkable thing to Ye Olde Photographer was the way this crane is designed to be able to put itself together and take itself apart. There were five flatbed trailer loads of weights and other equipment. In a previous life, YOP saw an even larger crane which required a smaller one to assemble all its (twelve trailer loads) of bits and pieces.
02 April: The concrete deck and approach walkways have been poured.
19 May: More settled landscaping seen on a sunny spring day.
