American Snout Butterfly
by Liz Bickel

Libytheana Carinenta

I didn't do any color alterations or anything other than very basic post processing. What you see comes totally from the back lighting.

The top side of the open Wings of this butterfly species have an orange tone.

To capture the maximum effect of the backlighting, I got down at flower level to shoot the butterfly (with closed wings) straight on. The flowers were also orange toned. So that undoubtedly influenced the outcome of this backlit photo. The back lighting, passing through the closed wings, made everything glow in orange tones. Taken at slightly different angles, other frames weren't quite this vivid of orange. It was interesting to me to see how the variables all came together to produce the few shots that were very orange.

He's a beauty, Liz! And so is your shot. I've never seen a butterfly like this. Your angle of view and the superb lighting have made for a marvelous image!

What an interesting butterfly! The color of the butterfly is a rather dull brown, contrasting nicely with the bright yellow-orange of the flower and the black background. Quite a beautiful shot!
