Manduca sexta - Technically speaking the red horn ID's these as Tobacco Hornworms but my group have given up that nasty habit and have switched to tomatoes. ;) Proper use of common names (if there is such a thing) reserves 'Tomato Hornworm' for Manduca quinquemaculata and darker worm with a black horn and slightly different side markings.

The big green bastard in my garden was eating my long green hot peppers. So their diet is evidently growing - from Tobacco to tomatoes to hot peppers.. Glad the wasps kill 'em....seems like they'd probably eat anything. No white jobs on my guy's back - we cut it in half just as one of the other folks below, and a dark green viscous blob oozed out - we thought it was the hot peppers liquidating the critter's insides! Nasty.

Your infected plants will be safe to eat. If your hornworms are already infested by wasp larvae, the worm is no longer feeding and should be left on the plant for the beneficial wasps to hatch. The hornworms are a favorite snack of chickens as well.

I found one on my tomatoe plant...I cut it in half and all kinds of green stuff oozed out..Yuckies

So if u get rid of them from the plants, are the plants safe to keep and are tomotoes safe. Or should they be thrown out. I found a whole bunch of them in my plants today and I am pretty grossed out, by searching them and throwing them out. Its creepy. will the plants survive

I just found one of these catapillers. He's not infested with wasps. His horn is blue. What exactly do they eat? Do you know?
