In addition to allowing a steeper climb on one side of the mountain, switchbacks allow downward bound Shay #6 (left) to pass upward bound Shay #2 (right). On this mountain the locomotive pushes cars up the mountain and then backs down. That means the locomotive is always lower than the cars except for the short span between the two switchbacks. This is a matter of safety since a can breaking free could not run away from the engine (which has better brakes).
This train is on the shortest trip option stopping half way up the mountain at Whittaker Station. The photo shows a lot of empty seats on this less popular run. The best views are available for those opting for the longer (5 1/2 hour) rides.
