In addition to allowing a steeper climb on one side of the mountain, switchbacks allow downward bound Shay #6 (left) to pass upward bound Shay #2 (right). On this mountain the locomotive pushes cars up the mountain and then backs down. That means the locomotive is always lower than the cars except for the short span between the two switchbacks. This is a matter of safety since a can breaking free could not run away from the engine (which has better brakes).
The brakeman kindly pointed out to me where I wanted to be to get this shot. All park employees were pleasant and helpful.
