Moenkopi Wash traverses and dissects a plateau in northern Arizona between Tuba City and Keams Canyon. Its tributaries create a number of canyons which expose the colorful Entrada Formation, the light colored cliffs of the Cow Springs Sandstone, and the brown Dakota Sandstone. The Entrada Formation consists of sandstones, siltstones, and shales which contain rusty layers alternating with light gray layers. Lower shale rich portions of this formation form badlands while the upper sandstone layers form rounded hills. Cross hatching in the rusty colored sandstone portions of the formation result from the reduction of the iron oxides by waters percolating along cracks in the sandstone. The lighter colored Cow Springs Sandstone forms steep cliffs which are capped by the brown Dakota Sandstone. Coal Mine Canyon is the best known of these canyons which also include Blue Canyon and Ha Ho No Geh Canyon.
