These pictures show in various degrees of detail the supposed tomb of John the Baptist. The Bradt guide has it there is no concrete evidence that John the Baptist's head was brought to Damascus from Palestine where he was beheaded following Salome's dance, but one noted historian related how the caliph Al-Walid discovered the head, then had a special column erected to mark the spot. The tomb as we now see it is Ottoman, since its predecessor, a wooden one, did not make it through the 1893 fire.
