Coming to Van I was nonplussed not to find the very old city, narrow streets, old houses, ancient mosques, and some Hittite and Roman antiquities thrown in that I expected. Instead I found a 20th century city. Only then did I read a bit about the subject, and learned that old Van had been destroyed in 1915 by the Ottomans, to prevent the conquering Russian from profiting from it’s existence. The region has a large Kurdish population; the Armenian section of the population, which had nationalist aspirations, was deported by government order and was subsequently massacred during World War I (source of the last line: Encyclopaedia Brittanica). Some ten years later a new city was founded to the East. So no old Van. But there is a Kale, a hill with fortress on it, well worth the visit, and an hours bus ride will bring you to Akdamar, with a splendid Armenian church on an island. I liked it so I gave it a gallery of its own.
After a September 2012 visit I finally show a decent collection of what the city looks like, unfortunately a vity that has seen two devastating earthquakes in 2011. The damage is obvious in many places, I was impressed by the people who now live on in a good humour as well as by the amount of repair being undertaken.
I only show my own pictures (I should go to Van to take some fresh ones). So even if I were to get the ones you mention I would not put them on the site. Sorry.

It was lovely to see the pictures of Van . I stayed there for one night in !975 on my way round the eastern provinces of Turkey. The people were so friendly and the scenery magnificent. I also have many pictures from the Kale and around the lake (there was a little cafe opposite Akdamar Island where we had lunch happy times!)

Turkey is so beautiful and people are so friendly! I wish I could visit some day. I agree with Mr. Candan. He said it very beautiful. Love is more important than territory.

I am glad I use other sources than you, who calls himself an observer, but does not know the first thing about proper observation.
And, importantly, I do not hide my name.

i guess you think that oppressed peoples with nationalist aspirations in their own homelands deserve to be deported and massacred

Sonbaharda Van'a giderken saðýnýzda kýrmýzýyla karýþmýþ alaca renkli yapraklar, solunuzda gölün güzelliðini yaþarsýnýz.Daðlarýn tepesinde erimeye fýrsat bulamamýþ kar kalýntýsýnýda görürsünüz.Van anlatýlmaz, yaþanýr.

Valuable and impressive captures..congrats..A few words to those:If somebody diggs out history OBJECTIVELY he/she would surely be surprised that the reality lies beyond their obsessive minds (this goes to Mr.Arman and the likes, who think that they are the owner of everything!)There is a COMMON history, culture, land (lived and shared together-carrying the burdens together),even blood running thru the veins..Discriminating and dividing:the essential pain of the world-all thru the ages, the womb from where the hostility was born. You see it hasn't worked out. So,Who owns what? Let's return back to NOW,to love and respect each other that we all construct the history together.Dont those photos cried out this reality to all humanity?..

So happy to see one of my ancestors buildings on Van Lake and I do hope to see there as soon as possible. When I look at the architecture of Anotolia I see the that those builidng that stand still with a great view are made by my ancestors ARMENIANS and so proud to be one of them.
