This is a complicated gallery. Many of the objects in the new Troy museum were subjects for pictures I took in the old museum in Çanakkale. In the new museum many are better lit (but some are not, so some of my older pictures are better), and the explanatory texts sometimes are better also. I decided to keep the old gallery in place, but to copy part of the content to this gallery if I know that an object is / was in both museums. Similarly I took some pictures of returned treasure on display in the Ankara museum a while ago, that was to be transported to this new museum, keeping the pictures I took in Ankara in their place also. The most recent pictures have Troy museum in their name, others don’t. I mixed the explanatory texts when appropriate, but for many old pictures I kept the old captions in place.
As for the new museum: I like the architecture, which is pretty modern but due to the choice of materials also has an almost archaic “feel”. I visited it on a cold December day, with the advantage of it being quiet. I think it will easily serve large crowds. I paid little attention to the many video presentations explaining Homer’s texts and other things I already knew, though a presentation on the ground floor was of some interest, as it showed sites in the “Troad”, the wider region around Troy. A stop-button on its display would be nice, as the repetitive music drives you mad after a while. If there are six or seven visitors they do not need to hear it go on and on. I shudder when I think of what it will do to the attendants.
I usually make “notes” speaking into my camera, but unfortunately during this visit I made an error in copying originals to another medium, and lost the voice recordings. So some objects cannot be identified by me.
