Silifke was Seleucia at the Kalykadnos (now the Göksu), a river. It dates from the third century BC. In 1190 the river cost Barbarossa (Fredric of Swabia, not the Barbary pirate and later admiral of the Ottoman fleet of the sixteenth century) his life, when he drowned in it. On the top of the hill above the town are the remains of a Byzantine castle. 27 Kilometres to the East in what is called Erdemli is Kizkalesi or Maiden’s Castle. You can swim there (I thought I saw some people walk most of the way at low tide). I didn’t visit it, but took some pictures from the distance. A bit further along the coast is the Korkyos Castle, that used to be linked to the Kizkalesi. Nice, with lots of spolia (recycled ancient monuments). I found Kizkalesi pleasant, but it was off-season, and a bit before the tourism boom so don’t hold me responsible if it is bad now. To the west of Silifke lies another castle, Tokmar Castle - Tokmar Kalesi.

SİLİFKE

Silifke, eski adıyla Seleucia, Kalikadnos (şimdiki adıyla Göksu) Nehri’nin kıyısında bir ilçe. 1190’da Barbaros (Emperator Fredric Swabian'ın! 16. yüzyılda Osmanlı donanmasının amirali değildir)) o nehirde boğularak hayatını kaybetti. İlçenin yukarısında bir tepede bir Bizans kalesinin kalıntıları bulunuyor. Silifke beni çok etkilemedi, kaleye tırmanmakla uğraşmadım ve Adana’ya geçtim. Üzgünüm Silifke, belki başka bir zaman tekrar gelirim.

27 km doğda, Erdemli denen yerde Kızkalesi var. Kýzkalesine yüzebilirsiniz (hafif bir gelgitte yolun çoğunu yürüyerek giden insanlar gördüğümü sanıyorum). Ben oraya gitmedim, ama biraz mesafeden bazı resimler çektim. Sahilden biraz daha uzakta, eskiden Kızkalesi’yle bağlantısı olan Korkos Kalesi var. Birçok spolia (yeniden kullanılabilir hale getirilmiş tarihi anıtlar) bulunan hoş bir yer.
