Anavarza and Anavarza Castle 08032008 2778.jpg

view map

In the foreground: A segment of the walls of Anavarza’s upper city (on top of the mountain ridge). Byzantine-Armenian work (but predominantly Armenian) from the 12th and 13th centuries.
They enclosed a space called ‘basse cour’ (French for ‘Lower courtyard’, meaning the outer bailey), which measures about 370 x 210 m.
In the background: The inner fortress (or keep) lies to the north, is about 270 x 60 m large and is separated from the outer bailey by a ravine, that was defended by an impressive bastion.

Correspondent: J.M.Criel, Antwerpen.
