Ankara 2006 09 0272.jpg

This ‘Güven Anıtı’ (= Monument of Confidence) was erected in 1935. Its designers were two Austrians: Anton Hanak (1875-1934) and Josef Thorak (1889-1952).

Hanak was professor of monumental sculpture, first at the School of Applied Arts in Vienna (1913-1932) and later on at Vienna's Academy of Fine Arts (1932-1934).
Thorak became (in 1933) one of the two "official sculptors" of the Third Reich. Both artists were well known for their "grandiose monuments".

Turkish tradition holds the belief that bird feces brings good luck. For instance if you get struck by avian bombardment, you should go buy lottery because your luck has turned! So we leave the birds alone and they bring good luck to Atatürk and the Republic :)
