Ankara_0319

view map

This is within the building on the previous picture, with a restaurant downstairs as well as huge shops. In the background Atatürk on horseback (the statue that gave the well known spot "Heykel" (= statue) its (informal) name).

I was informed Uluş is the proper name, but whenever I ask a taxidriver to bring me to Heykel he understands, whereas Uluş seems to be used for the district also.

Now, I have not been to Ankara for the past 35+ years and this building was not around during my childhood. But I can never forget this particular location. Early 1960's there was an airplane crash here and hundreds were killed. Next day my father drove us there and the pile of rubble was still smoldering and there was a terrible smell of death in the air. I still dream about this childhood experience.
