The street which runs towards the western city gate, as seen from outside the city. Past the city gate, this south-north oriented street runs farther on to the western end of the Decumanus Maximus. There it makes a right angle (90°) with the Decumanus, which runs to the east (this is: to the right, on this picture). Note that the western city gate was not situated at the western end of the Decumanus Maximus, but some 80 m to the south of it.
The Decumanus Maximus is the main east-west-oriented road of a roman city or military camp.
