Laleli mosque

view map

One of my favorite mosques, partly because of the majestic setting, on an elevated platform all on its own. Founded by Mustafa III, built 1759-1763, design by Mehmet Tahir Aga, "greatest and most original of the Turkish baroque architects" (I quote Strolling through Istanbul, Redhouse Press, 1989 - an excellent book).

To the right of the mosque is the sultan's royal pavilion, with first a gate that opens to a ramp, so he could ascend to the height of the connecting corridor we see between the gate and the mosque, so he'd reach his private prayer room.
