Column of Marcian or Maiden's Column

view map

One of four surviving Byzantine honorific columns. A granite monolythic column with a Corinthean capital on a plinth with eagles at the corners. A Victory on the basement can be still discerned. It is dedicated to Emperor Marcian (450-457). The Victory was probably what led to the Turks calling it the Maiden's Column.
