The civilian (left) is a university student, representing the youth of the young republic as a scholar.

The middle figure is a shepherd, wearing a "kepenek" (a stiff felt cloak). He represents the peasants.

The soldier (right) is a "Mehmetçik", representing the armed forces charged with protecting the country from aggression.
