Tokat Ebu Sems Hanegahi mosque

view map

The central square has two mosques (one small), a post office, an underground shopping area, a very old and large hamam, and provides a good view of the castle. It also has an artificial palm that will light up at dawn in a weird red. In Turhal I saw a green one. Soon every town will have one. By then they should be taken down again.

This is the smaller of the two mosques I mentioned.

A viewer added the following: The Ebu Şems Hanegahı (built in 1288, but thoroughly restored in the mid 20th century) was a building designed specifically for gatherings of a Sufi brotherhood and was a place for spiritual retreat and character reformation. These places (‘hanegah’ or ‘zaviye’) often served as hospices for Sufi travellers and Islamic students. Although there is generally a prayer room inside, they are (historically spoken) not really mosques.
This building however has been called ‘Ebu Şems Hanegahı Cami’ or also ‘Vezir Ahmet Paşa Mescidi’ after restoration (cami = mosque; mescit = little mosque, not suitable for the Friday prayer, because there is no minber/pulpit).
